Audio / Video: Captions
Captions should be synchronized and provide an equivalent experience to users who depend on them.
Start Early
Video captions are an important part of making course content accessible to everyone. We strongly encourage you to add them when you are developing your course rather than waiting until they are necessary.
Plan Ahead
There are different ways to add captions to videos that you use in your courses but in many cases, writing out scripts before you create a video can help with the process, but this doesn’t work for everyone or in all situations.
Two Step Process
To add captions to videos you already have, we recommend a simple two step process.
Part one
Use YouTube auto captioning. This will take care of a good portion of the heavy lifting. It will automatically generate captions for your video that are synchronized, but will lack proper punctuation, capitalization and will probably get a few words wrong.
Part two
Review and correct the subtitles. Using the built in caption editor, this is easier than it sounds. This step ensures that the captions provide an equivalent experience for all users.
