Challenges and Implications of Social Stigmas Around Aging and Homelessness
Abstract
ID: 12
Homelessness is a significant form of social marginalization which should be a pressing
concern for policy-makers, gerontologists, housing advocates and public health professionals
alike. The intention of this literature review is to examine current statistics on homelessness
among older adults, prejudices faced by older homeless populations in association with their age,
and the intersections of other identities with being older and unhoused. Implications will be
explored such as the level of empathy demonstrated by staff and systems of support offered to
these disenfranchised populations. Overall, this paper aims to better understand how older adults
experiencing homelessness may be perceived and stigmatized because of their unique identities.
